The headset is the set of parts that allow the fork tube to rotate with respect to the frame's steering tube. It is more or less complex depending on the system and includes various parts such as bearings in cages or bearings, tracks, cups, washers, nuts, lock nuts, etc. grouped at the upper and lower ends of the head tube or tube.

There are two universal systems: the traditional or threaded and the Ahead.

TRADITIONAL OR THREADED SYSTEM (THREADED HEADSET)

In this system, the set of cup-bearings for the upper part of the headset is threaded to the fork tube by means of a nut / lock-nut system that consolidates the fork / steering tube assembly. The stem is extended in a tube that is embedded inside the fork tube and is attached to it by means of a bevel-cut bushing and a long screw that is tightened with an Allen key at the top of the stem. Therefore, the stem tube and the headset are independent.

AHEAD SYSTEM (THREADLESS HEADSET)

The fork tube has no thread and is lengthened so that the stem embraces it directly, being attached to it by means of Allen screws. A preload screw / plug that threads into a spider housed inside the fork tube consolidates the system and prevents play in the steering assembly. If we remove this screw and loosen the screws on the stem, which in this case is a separate piece, the fork is released from the frame tube.
